Head of Operations and Maintenance (O&M) - Green Hydrogen and Ammonia [Norway]


 
The Head of Operations and Maintenance (O&M) will play a pivotal role in establishing and managing the O&M setup for our first green ammonia production facility SkiGA in Norway, close to Bergen. This position is responsible for ensuring the optimal selection of the O&M setup for the plant, identifying and selecting the optimal O&M partner, the efficient and safe start of the operation of the plant and optimizing maintenance processes to achieve production targets and sustainability goals. You will closely work together with the Project Manager of the plant, as well as our other experts, for instance on EPC and Commercial topics. Presence in Norway is required, with regular visits to the Skipavika Green Ammonia (SkiGA) project, located at Skipavika Havneterminal, Gulen municipality, and our office in Bergen.

Tasks

  • Engineering inputs: Ensure operability and maintainability in the engineering phase of the project
  • O&M strategy development: Develop and implement the O&M strategy and plan for our first green ammonia flagship plant SkiGA
  • Budget and cost management: Develop and manage the O&M budget, ensuring cost-effective operations while maintaining quality and safety standards
  • Team leadership: select and engage an O&M service provider, build a high-performing O&M team, and supervise hiring and training staff to ensure operational excellence
  • Plant operations: once in operation, either 1) oversee day-to-day plant operations, monitoring process parameters, and ensuring compliance with safety, environmental, and regulatory standard, or 2) move into a cross-plant O&M leadership role
  • Maintenance management: Establish preventive and predictive maintenance programs, manage maintenance schedules, and optimize equipment reliability and performance
  • Safety and compliance: Ensure a strong safety culture throughout the O&M team, and ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and permits
  • Environmental sustainability: Drive initiatives to minimize the environmental impact of operations, including waste reduction and energy efficiency
  • Performance metrics: Define and track key performance indicators (KPIs) for plant operations and maintenance, regularly reporting progress to senior management
  • Vendor management: Collaborate with suppliers and contractors to ensure the timely delivery of spare parts and services, negotiating contracts as needed
  • Continuous improvement: Identify opportunities for process optimization, efficiency improvements, and cost reduction, implementing best practices in O&M
Requirements

  • Minimum a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field. Master's degree preferred
  • Proven experience in a leadership role in O&M within the chemical or petrochemical industry, with at least 10 years of relevant experience
  • Experience with building an O&M team and organization is a big plus
  • Strong knowledge of green hydrogen and ammonia production processes are a big plus
  • Familiarity with safety standards, environmental regulations, and compliance requirements
  • Excellent leadership and team management skills, with a track record of building and leading high-performing teams
  • Budget management experience, with the ability to optimize costs without compromising quality and safety
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities
  • Great communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams
  • Continuous improvement mindset and a commitment to sustainability
  • Language: Fluency in English required, Norwegian skills are a plus
